The Crop Over festival is a culturally rich event celebrated annually, drawing visitors from around the globe. Rooted in the island’s colonial history, when it marked the end of the sugarcane harvest, it has since evolved into a dynamic celebration of Bajan culture, music, and tradition. Here’s your ultimate guide to experiencing Crop Over.

When is Crop Over 2025

The Crop Over festival in 2025 will launch officially on July 5th, 2025 at the opening gala and finish with Grand Kadooment on August 4th, 2025. However, celebrations will commence long before in May.

Crop Over in Barbados History

Some reports state that Crop Over began as far back as 1687 in Barbados during slavery. It signifies the end of the sugar cane season. However, the festival had a revival in 1974 by the Barbados Tourism Authority. This revival has both attracted tourist from all over the world and preserved cultural traditions.

Booking your Flight to Barbados

Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) is the airport of Barbados and located in Christ Church. As with all carnivals in the Caribbean booking your flight early is a must if you want to get a reasonably priced flight.

Accommodation

Typically your options for accommodation will range from luxury resorts to cozy guesthouses. The three areas recommended are:

  • Bridgetown which is in St. Michael: For central access to events.
  • St. Lawrence Gap which is in Christ Church: Known for nightlife and beaches.
  • Holetown which is in St. James: For a more upscale, quieter vibe.

All three of these locations have excellent transportation and wide range of hotels, airbnd’s and guesthouses. In addition, taxi stands are near all of these locations with the most being in Bridgetown. Supermarkets and stores are also located in walking distance from all of these locations. St. Lawrence gap is more geared towards tourists. Below we have placed a list of places to stay in all three of these areas.

Some of the biggest events are Rise, Soca on de Hill and Puff of Colour which is a massive paint and powder party. As the season has not officially started yet a lot an event calender for 2025 has not been released as yet, as it is released we will post the links here.

Grand kadooment

Kadooment Day or Grand Kadooment is the grand finale of the Crop Over season. It is always the first Monday in August. Kadooment is a daylong parade of costumes, music and celebration.  While the starting point over the years varies the street party usually starts at the National Stadium and ends at Spring Garden Highway.

Kadooment the bands are judged at the end of the day and the bands with the most creative costumes and theme are given prizes. In addition, the road march song is chosen which is the most popular song for the season that was played the most that day at the judging points. To give you a better idea here is a short clip of some of the action on the road kadooment day with the band Fifth Element.

This is just a short list of some of the bands for 2025, some of the bands will be posted on our website to stay locked on our carnival costumes page.

I have had experience with many bands over the years, as a drinks runner, patron and a videographer. I can honestly say the best experience I have had with a band is Zulu International. It had the best service, Djs, atmosphere and overall experience.

Crop Over Artists and Music

The music is what fuels the festival and soca music in Barbados is some of the most popular in the Caribbean. Some of the most popular artists in Barbados are Lil Rick, Peter Ram, Alison Hinds, Hypa Sounds, and Edwin Yearwood. Those artists are the veterans and have been making hits for 15 years plus. Some of the artists from the younger generation are Quan the artist, Mole, Bruce Almighty, Leadpipe and Saddis Faith Callender.

Where to Eat in Barbados

Barbados’s national dish is Cou-Cou and Flying Fish. Macaroni Pie, Fish Cakes, and Souse are local favorites. Barbados is also known for its local beverages Rum Punch and Mauby. There are many places to eat in Barbados that range from fine cuisine to fast food. One of the most popular restaurants in Barbados is Chefette, it is the largest fast food restaurant chain the Caribbean, however, it is only located in Barbados with 14 locations. It is most popular for its broasted chicken meals and rotis. These rotis in my opinion are the best and most popular in the Caribbean, people literally buy them in bulk and freeze them to take back overseas with them after a trip. When I first found out about this practice it was funny to me however, that shows their popularity.

What to Wear

  • Day Events: Light, breathable clothing. Hats and sunscreen are essential.
  • Foreday Morning Jam & Grand Kadooment: Comfortable shoes and costumes (if participating). Many visitors opt to purchase or rent costumes from bands to join the parade.

Travel Insurance for Crop Over

Travel insurance protects travelers from financial losses that can occur during trips. It can provide coverage from medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage or travel delays. Depending on the coverage of the insurance it covers domestic and international travel. Travel insurance is not really something we think about until we need it. Travel packages for Crop Over may require you to have travel insurance if you book with them as well. Therefore, it might be mandatory in some instances.

Before purchasing travel insurance, it is important to understand everything covered and conditions that may apply.
