One of the distilleries in Barbados, the Mount Gay distillery, was founded in 1703 which means the spirit has been in production for over 300 years.

Mount Gay Rum
We have to start the list with the oldest and premier rum brands in the world. The brand is known for smooth and well balanced rums. The distillery located in St. Lucy in Barbados was originally owned by John Sober who inherited the distillery in 1703. The Sober family hired Sir John Gay Alleyne, who due to his innovations made the brand so successful that they renamed the distillery in his honor.
The key products produced from Mount Gay are:
- Mount Gay Eclipse;
- Mount Gay Black Barrel;
- Mount Gay XO; and
- Mount Gay 1703.
The brand has a wide catalogue of rums which are recognized worldwide and have won numerous awards. In 2024 in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Mount Gay won three double gold medals for Mount Gay Eclipse Navy Strength, Mount Gay XO, Mount Gay Single Estate Series and one gold medal for Mount Gay Black Barrell.
The quality of Mount Gay rum and its unique taste may come down to the quality of sugar cane used and the climate of Barbados where it is grown. It uses quality molasses, coral water and a unique distillation process.
Old Brigand Rum
Old brigand Rum is produced at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados. The brand was established by Alleyne Arthur in the 1960s and was purchased by the R.L. Seale Company in 1993. The rum was originally known as Alleyne Arthur’s Old Brigand but the name was changed after it changed ownership. The rum has two versions:
- Old Bridgand (Original): This is the original version and is praised for its smoothness.
- Old Brigand Black Label: This is a superior blend to the original and has received positive reviews. It is a nice choice for mixing with cocktails.
The Real McCoy
The Real McCoy is a Barbadian rum whose name is inspired by Bill McCoy. The brand has stated he was the first person to take alcohol from the Caribbean by boat and sail to New York and legally act as a floating liquor store. Mr. McCoy never altered the spirits to stretch the alcohol to make a profit. Therefore, the rum brand emphasizes on transparency in its production process and stresses authenticity. The rum is free from additives such as sweeteners or artificial flavors. The company currently has three products under its catalogue:
- The Real McCoy 5 Year Old Rum;
- The Real McCoy 12 Year Old Rum; and
- The Real McCoy 3 Year Old Rum.
Cockspur Rum
Cockspur rum was established in 1884 by Danish sailor Valdemar Hanschell. The rum is produced by Hanschell Inniss Ltd. and distilled at the West Indies Rum Distillery. The rum is made from molasses and is aged in oak barrels which contribute to its flavor. Cockspur rum is recognized as one of the top rated rums globally and has won gold medals in the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 1981, 1984 and 1989.

Plantation Barbados Rum
Plantation rum is a Barbadian rum owned by Cognac Ferrand. In 2017 it acquired the West Indies Rum Distillery and produce their rums directly from Barbados. Some of the different offerings the brand has are:
- Plantation Extra Old – This is their 20th anniversary rum, which celebrates Alexandre Gabriel’s leadership at Cognac Ferrand. It is noted for its rich flavors including vanilla, coconut and butterscotch;
- Plantation Grande Reserve Aged Rum – This is part of their signature blends aged in Barbados before being sent to France for further ageing.
